Paint - First Sunlight

I've been looking at the car since I painted it and I've been puzzled about what the car would look like in direct sunlight.  Under the florescent lights in the garage it looks blue from one angle then purple from another.  I am not crazy about purple and I fear I might have to repaint.

So, I put on the side exhaust and backed the car into the sunlight just a few minutes ago.  It's blue, it's stunning, and it's not purple.  I am a happy camper.  Check out the video by clicking this link:

Ignore the streaks.  They clean up with a rag.

It's in the sun but looks dark royal blue from this angle.

From this angle it's very blue.  Gerri said, "Wow, it's beautiful."

"Oh my goodness."

The racing stripe is really ghosted, pushed really deep.  Leave a comment and let me know if you think it should be more visible.  It's not too late to do so.

Again, you have to ignore the streaks.  It's just dirty.
I see a little purple in this photo but I assure you, It's BLUE!

Although there will be little work done on our car over the next few days, I will publish a Corvette related post that I am sure you'll want to see.  Check back in a few days to see the mystery posting.

Thanks for watching.

  1. I'm not a big fan of the ghost effect. It is a great stripe but I would have done a complete contrast (gray, silver, or black) and leave it bold, but that is just me. I'm sure it is and will be awesome. I have no doubts you have the look you want and it will be the best.

  2. Jim Q, I value your comment and I tend to agree. I liked the strip when I first put it on the car but not sure if I am still as delighted now that it is ghosted. I have a couple ideas. Your comments will definitely be considered. Thanks.

  3. I also prefer a more visible stripe. Unbelievable how much more blue it looks with the video camera...all of the still camera photos, (inside and outside) look more purple to me.

  4. The paint looks great! But I would have to say I loved the look of the stripe prior to the ghosting.

Cant wait to see you finished car! I check your blog daily for updates!!

  5. Hey Alan,

Ty asked that I wait on making a decision until he can look at the stripe next week when he visits. I will do that. We should have a final decision in a week or so. Thanks for the comment.

    1. These pics will help me ensure I have my 63 to be as close to original as I can...I have ordered the inner and outer slip panel to glass in along with original glass windows dated Nov 62 and new seals; my next challenge will then be finding interior trim for the split area.....I did find one set for sale for $3K...but that's not going to happen when I can make some once I have the panels in place (many moons ago I once was a pretty good tin man with the NW Airlines ).....when you are ready to install yours, I would like to see how they all fit? Thanks you John..your blog is the greatest.

  10. I can't thank you enough for all of the paint steps and photos! You are a blessing for a guy that his GTO is almost the same color and wants to repaint it. THANK YOU for all of these photos and steps in the paint - the HOK choices and all. I hope to see you at a car show someday. I'm down in Portland and just did a NW Corvette Association show in Van. WA. I hope to see your beautiful car at one of these shows some day!
